The relevance to People Management: each generation can have its own values and behaviours, and it takes skill to manage the best of all points of view without unnecessary conflict

Management of diversity has become a very important skill in the workplace. Part of this is the ability to manage across generations successfully enough that staff enjoy and even speak enthusiastically about the multi-generational environment in which they work. The same principles can be applied rather similarly to all-age voluntary organisations and even to extended families.

Nigel will give a brief overview of the generations commonly found in the workplace, including their customary likes and dislikes. This will lead to the exploration of a number of ideas for best practice.

Nigel Paterson is a trainer and educator who works part-time for Richard Lewis Communications in Warnford, giving training to overseas business people, academics, government officers and politicians in business and cross-cultural communication. He also works part-time for a thriving, all-age church in Hedge End.

    Many thanks for such a well-researched and thought-provoking session. As well as benefitting from the handout, a useful guide to managing people born in different periods, we were able to explore ways in which we can structure the business to get the most from its people.
